Civitan Monrovia and their Ebola Prevention/Relief Efforts in Liberia

Information about Civitan Monrovia

  • Civitan Monrovia, chartered in 2011, has approximately 40-50 members. However, over 300 individuals living in communities surrounding Monrovia, the capital of Liberia in West Africa, are working in the name of Civitan but are not members yet due to lack of funds ( no jobs) and an interrupted recruitment process (due to the Ebola outbreak).

  • During the recruitment process, one club builder, Sando Sirleaf (along with 6 of his family members) died from Ebola. Victor Jah, an incoming member, just recently lost his life after being exposed to the Ebola virus while assisting with relief efforts.

  • Civitans in Monrovia are risking their lives every day to bring information, “preventative sanitary materials” (Clorox, hand sanitizer, hand washing soap, antiseptic detergent, buckets, faucets, antibiotic medicines), and food to Ebola survival victims and their families, developmentally disabled people, and the vulnerable poor households.

  • The president of this club, Isaac B.S. Brown, also serves as the Country Contact Representative for Civitan International, and has sent out a cry for help via Facebook.

  • Monetary donations can be sent via Moneygrams purchased at various businesses such as Walmart and Harris Teeter. Moneygrams cost $14.95 and enable the purchaser to send money overseas. As part of this service, money is converted to the receiver’s currency. A reference number is given to the purchaser who in turns sends it to the receiver so the Moneygram can be picked up in a secure manner. NCDE Civitans can send money to Civitan International and John Rynearson, Executive Vice President, will purchase and send the Moneygram to President Brown.

How you Can help:

  • Saturday, October 25, World Junior Civitan Day. Junior Civitans in Divisions 5 & 6 are invited to attend officer/leadership training in the morning and participate in a fund raiser at the New Bern Mall (Belk) in the afternoon. They will be distributing an informational flyer about relief efforts in Monrovia and selling hand sanitizers for $5.00 each. Two hundred and fifty (250) hand sanitizers have been donated so all the money ($1250.00… if we sell out) will go to Civitan Monrovia.
